In Support of Recreational Hunting & Fishing on Federal Lands

Jul 16, 2013
Jim's Blog
As a supporter of gun rights and recreational hunting and fishing, I am pleased to cosponsor HR 1825, the “Recreational Fishing & Hunting Heritage Opportunities Act of 2013”.  This bill requires land managers at the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to facilitate use and access for hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting activities on federal lands, making access easier for the sportsmen in the 1st District of Oklahoma.  The bill, however, does not include National Park lands as hunting grounds.

This bill eliminates the red tape that sportsmen encounter, often needlessly.  As an Eagle Scout, I know the value of the great outdoors for building character and teaching skills to our young people.  The federal government should open up its vast tracks of lands to sportsmen consistent with public safety.   The outpouring of support for this bill among my colleagues is encouraging, and I hope it passes the House swiftly.

HR 1825 has the support of many outdoors and sportsmen’s organizations, including the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, National Rifle Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Association, Ruffed Grouse Society, Safari Club International, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, and many more. Sportsmen across the country would be thrilled with the passage of this legislation.
