Department of Homeland Security Disregards Enforcing our Immigration Laws
Congressman Bridenstine co-signed a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) challenging Secretary Janet Napolitano to explain the reported decision to release so-called “low-risk” illegal immigrants from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. Numerous reports indicate that ICE chose to release detained illegal immigrants rather than finding savings elsewhere in the DHS budget. As the letter states, this unilateral decision is “extraordinary, unprecedented, and dangerous.” Exposing law-abiding citizens to increased risk is a bad way to achieve the cost-cutting requirements demanded by sequestration. Congressman Bridenstine asked Secretary Napolitano to provide information regarding the number of detainees released; plans for future releases; criteria used for release eligibility; the cost savings associated with releases; and how DHS plans to track released detainees.
