Today, Congressman Jim Bridenstine voted for HR 1735, the FY16 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).   NDAA is a bipartisan bill which authorizes funding for America’s armed forces and sets Department of Defense (DOD) policy.  Congress has passed this bill 53 years in a row.  The FY16 NDAA provides our military with one-year relief from devastating cuts imposed by the Budget Control Act sequestration.

Congressman Bridenstine worked on numerous provisions in the bill important to Oklahoma, including the following:

  • Co-sponsored amendment to reverse Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing of the Lesser Prairie Chicken (LPC) and to de-list the American Burying Beetle (ABB).  Military installations and training in Oklahoma are negatively impacted by ESA mandates for the LPC and ABB.
  • Reallocated funding to procure next-generation F-16 simulators for the Air National Guard
  • Reallocated funding to meet the requirements for the National Guard State Partnership Program

Congressman Bridenstine:

“The NDAA allows Congress to set spending and policy priorities for our military.  Though it’s not enough, I am proud that HR 1735 unwinds defense sequestration for one year and prevents more devastating cuts to military combat readiness.”

As a member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Congressman Bridenstine has become a recognized leader on military space issues.  HR 1735 includes numerous military space-related provisions authored and worked on by Congressman Bridenstine including the following:

  • Reallocates funding to fully fund the Air Force’s Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Pathfinder program, an innovative test bed for new SATCOM acquisition methods
  • Reallocates funding toward the Air Force Office of Operationally Responsive Space
  • Requires DOD to meet certain military weather satellite requirements without reliance on China and Russia
  • Requires DOD to develop a plan to incorporate commercial space-based weather data into military weather forecasting
  • Includes Rep. Bridenstine’s bill, H.R. 1864, which would streamline the DOD process of acquiring SATCOM services.
