The so-called "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013" will not accomplish its objectives, but it will certainly infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights and make criminals out of law abiding citizens. Many objections have been raised and more will be said after the legislation is actually presented in the Senate. Consider just one example.
Under this law, if you let a friend borrow a rifle for a hunting trip and you are not present, you are in violation of federal law. If you borrow a friend's gun to try on the firing range and he is not present, you are in violation of federal law. Each of these would-be crimes would result in up to 5 years in prison for both the borrower and lender.
To avoid becoming a criminal in these transactions, gun users would be required to find a federally licensed firearms dealer and pay a fee to be subjected to the federal scrutiny of a universal background check.
This definitely constitutes an infringement on the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
This flawed bill will originate in the Senate. If it passes there and comes to the House, I will be voting "no."
