Obama's Budget Guts Illegal Immigration Enforcement

I am disappointed that the President’s budget request slashes funding for interior enforcement.  The Fiscal Year 2014 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget would cut funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and eliminate funding for the “287g” program.

Using authorities under 287g, the federal government can train state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration law.  287g is especially important in a time of tight budgets.  DHS and ICE will increasingly rely on state and local police to help crack down on illegal immigration.

Further impairing state and local enforcement support, the DHS budget cuts funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP), which reimburses states and localities for the costs of incarcerating illegal aliens.  Absent federal support, state and local police may simply have to release illegal aliens if they cannot afford to keep them incarcerated.

The President’s timing is particularly bad; the so-called “Gang of 8” Senators are due to unveil their proposal for comprehensive immigration reform this week.  Border security and enforcement of our laws is the necessary first step of reforming our broken immigration system.

The DHS budget request demonstrates that President Obama is not serious about interior enforcement.  I will work with my colleagues to reverse these devastating cuts to ICE, 287g, and SCAAP.
