Congressman Jim Bridenstine Votes Against Amtrak Subsidies
Today I voted against HR 749, the passenger rail bill which authorizes funding primarily for Amtrak. 100 other republicans joined me in attempting to stop First District taxpayers from subsidizing government passenger rail transport.
Congress should be phasing out federal funding for Amtrak. Instead, this bill increases authorization levels between 2016-2019 and makes it easier for Amtrak to access taxpayer-backed debt.
An amendment offered by Rep. Tom McClintock to end operating subsidies was defeated on the floor despite getting 147 GOP votes. Real Amtrak reform would cut off federal subsidies and encourage serious -- rather than token -- private competition. HR 749 does neither.
