Legislation sponsored by two Oklahoma congressmen and intended to put more emphasis on weather forecasting passed the U.S. House of Representatives without dissent Tuesday evening.
Third District Congressman Frank Lucas is listed as primary sponsor of H.R. 1561, and First District Congressman Jim Bridenstine is a co-sponsor.
The bill is similar to one proposed by Bridenstine last year.
It directs the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to prioritize weather forecasting to provide earlier warnings of dangerous events such as tornadoes and hurricanes.
“Weather forecasting is not a partisan issue,” Bridenstine said in a news release. “I am grateful to my House colleagues for recognizing the importance of improving our understanding of weather in order to better safeguard our constituents.”
