The First District Congressional Office is proud to recognize W.C. “Tiny” Tomsen as the October 2013 Veteran in the Spotlight.
Please learn more about Mr. Tomsen and why he is such a deserving recipient of this award by reading more about his life’s accomplishments below:
W.C. “Tiny” Tomsen had grandparents who were Danish immigrants that settled in Nebraska. Tiny attended one room “East Bell” country school in Minden, Nebraska where he was the HS valedictorian. He went on to earn his BS in Military Engineering at West Point in 1954 and later earned his MS in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M in 1960. He graduated the US Army Command and General Staff College in 1970 and married Barbara Tyree of Muskogee, OK. Together they have three married children and seven grandchildren. Their son who is a West Point graduate and retired US Army, and their grandson who is also a West Point graduate and is currently serving in Afghanistan carried on the family tradition of service.
Mr. Tomsen’s Military Career and Accomplishments:
- Officer, US Army, retired 1976. Assignments included:
-- Three airborne (parachute) unit assignments.
-- Seven years cold war duty in Europe.
-- One year in Vietnam.
-- Three years in Alaska.
-- Army General Staff, Pentagon
-- 1973-1976, duty at the Tulsa District, Corps of Engineers.
-- Completed Kaw Dam & Reservoir, Ponca City
-- Completed McClellan-Kerr Navigation System
-- Broke ground for Skiatook Dam and Reservoir
- Awards include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal.
Mr. Tomsen’s Civilian Career and Accomplishments:
- General Contractor since 1976, owner, Tomsen Construction, Tulsa.
- Hunter, outdoorsman, wildlife conservationist, traveler:
-- Hunted Europe, Africa, Alaska. Large game & birds.
-- Life member National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited.
-- Member, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Pheasants Forever, National Wild Turkey Federation, Wild Sheep Federation, Oklahoma Wildlife Federation.
-- Oklahoma Wildlife Conservationist of the Year, 1976.
-- Founder, charter chapter of Alaska Ducks Unlimited, 1971.
-- Lifetime Achievement Award, Tulsa Chapter, Ducks Unlimited.
-- Board of Directors, Oklahoma Aquarium Foundation.
-- A founding member of NatureWorks, Inc. Tulsa, OK, 1977.
-- Started NatureWorks “Monuments Program” erecting bronze wildlife monuments in Tulsa public places, 1994.
-- This year 23d wildlife bronze monument was erected. -- Recipient, 2003 “Wildlife Stewardship Award”.
